Understanding the Benefits of Pre-Shrinking Treatment

Why Pre-Shrinking Matters in a BJJ Gi

When people buy a new BJJ gi, one of the biggest concerns is shrinkage.

A gi may fit well when it is new, but after a few washes, the sleeves may become shorter, the pants may tighten, and the overall fit may change. For BJJ practitioners, this can be frustrating because fit is not only about comfort. It also affects movement, grip feel, and even competition use.

This is why pre-shrinking is an important part of BJJ gi production.

What Is Pre-Shrinking?

Pre-shrinking is a fabric treatment process done before the gi is cut and sewn.

During this process, the fabric goes through washing, finishing, and stabilising treatment, allowing most of its natural shrinkage to happen before production. This helps the fabric become more stable before it is made into a jacket and pants.

This does not mean a gi will never shrink at all. Cotton fabric may still change slightly depending on washing temperature, drying method, and long-term use. But proper pre-shrinking helps reduce major size changes after the customer starts wearing and washing the gi.

Why Is This Important for a BJJ Gi?

A BJJ gi is different from normal clothing.

It is gripped, pulled, washed often, and used under high-intensity training conditions. If the fabric is not properly treated before production, the gi may shrink too much after washing.

This can affect:

Sleeve length
Pant length
Jacket width
Overall fit
Competition compliance
Training comfort

For clubs, teams, and brand customers, shrinkage control is even more important. If different batches of gis shrink differently, the size chart becomes unreliable. A customer may order the same size, but after washing, the fit may not feel the same.

So fabric stability is not a small detail. It is part of product consistency.

Our Approach

At BLITZFIGHT, we pay attention to the fabric before the gi is made.

The process starts from yarn selection, weaving, dyeing, washing, and pre-shrinking. By controlling these steps earlier, we can better manage fabric structure, shrinkage, colour stability, and final fit.

Pre-shrinking is not just an extra step. It is part of how we control the final product.

A good BJJ gi should not only look good when it is new. It should also remain relatively stable after training, washing, and long-term use.

A properly pre-shrunk gi is closer to its intended fit from the beginning, with fewer unexpected changes after washing.

This is especially important for athletes who care about sleeve length, pant length, and overall fit.

Final Thoughts

Pre-shrinking is one of those details that customers may not notice at first, but they will feel after wearing and washing the gi.

It helps keep the size more stable.
It helps the fit stay closer to the original design.
It also helps improve consistency in production.

For us, this is why BJJ gi production does not only start from cutting and sewing. The quality of a gi starts with the fabric, and fabric stability needs to be controlled from the source.
