How to Choose the Right BJJ Gi: Weight, Fabric and Fit

Four folded Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gis in white, blue, and black to help choose Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi.

Choosing a BJJ gi is not only about colour or design.

The weight, fabric, fit, and shrinkage control all affect how the gi feels during training and how it performs after repeated washing.

Gi Weight

BJJ gis are usually described as lightweight, middleweight, or heavyweight.

A lightweight gi is usually better for hot weather, frequent training, and travel. It feels easier to move in, but very light fabric may not feel as strong or structured.

A middleweight gi offers a more balanced option for regular training. It gives enough structure while still keeping the gi comfortable.

A heavyweight gi can feel stronger and harder to grip, but it may also feel hotter and less flexible during long training sessions.

The right weight depends on training style, climate, and personal preference.

GSM Is Only a Reference

GSM is often used to describe fabric weight, but it does not explain everything.

Two gis with similar GSM can still feel different because of yarn, weave density, dyeing, washing, and finishing.

That is why a gi should not be judged by weight alone.

Fabric structure and production control also matter.

Fabric and Weave

Pearl weave is one of the most common fabrics used for BJJ gis because it can balance durability and weight.

But not every pearl weave feels the same.

The yarn, weaving, dyeing, washing, and pre-shrinking process all affect the final fabric.

A good BJJ gi fabric should feel strong enough for training, comfortable enough to move in, and stable after washing.

We explain more about this in our blog on BJJ gi fabric and why quality starts from the source.

Fit and Size

Fit is just as important as fabric.

A gi should allow movement, but it should not have too much extra fabric. Sleeve length, jacket length, pant length, shoulder fit, and overall cut all matter.

Different brands use different size charts, so an A2 from one brand may not fit the same as an A2 from another brand.

Before choosing a gi, always check the size chart carefully.

For competition, the gi also needs to meet the rules of the event. We cover this in our blog on IBJJF gi rules and what to check before competition.

Shrinkage

Shrinkage is common with cotton BJJ gis.

Pre-shrinking helps reduce major size changes, but it does not mean the gi will never shrink again.

Hot water, high heat drying, and strong washing methods can still affect the final size.

For more detail, you can read our blogs on why pre-shrinking matters in a BJJ gi and how to wash and care for your BJJ gi.

Training, Competition or Club Use

For daily training, comfort and durability are usually the main focus.

For competition, colour, fit, patch placement, and rule compliance also need to be checked.

For club or custom orders, consistency becomes even more important. Fabric, sizing, colour, logo placement, and shrinkage need to stay stable across different sizes and bulk production.

A custom BJJ gi should not only look right. It also needs to work properly in training.

Choosing the Right Gi

There is no single best BJJ gi for everyone.

A lighter gi may suit hot weather and frequent training.
A middleweight gi is often the most balanced everyday option.
A heavier gi may suit athletes who prefer a stronger and more structured feel.

At BLITZFIGHT, we pay attention to the full production process, from fabric selection and dyeing to pre-shrinking, sizing, cutting, and sewing.

Whether you are choosing from our own brand gi collection or planning a custom BJJ gi project, the goal is simple: a gi that fits well, feels right, and can handle real training.
